Jacob Nicholas Sorensen, 90, of Bancroft, Nebraska, passed away on Monday, November 28, 2011 at St. Francis Memorial Hospital in West Point, Nebraska. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 1, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Bancroft with Pastor Philip Hale officiating. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Munderloh Funeral Home in Bancroft. Interment will be in the Bancroft Cemetery. Jacob Nicholas Sorensen was born February 12, 1921 in the home of his grandparents, Jacob and Therssa (Hass) Elsasser, in Bancroft, Nebraska. His parents were Jeff and Anna (Elsasser) Sorensen. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bancroft. He attended school at District 78. As a young man he helped his father with the farming and helped neighboring farmers. In 1937 he began farming on his own, and lived at home until his marriage to Esther Anna Jahnke on February 10, 1946. Jacob and Esther lived 31 years on the farm now owned by their son Steven. They then moved to the Sorensen family farm west of Bancroft. Along with his farming, Jacob milked cows and raised hogs for many years. Esther passed away on May 2, 1993. Jacob continued to live on his home place and help his son Steven with farming. He was active in the Bancroft Senior Center and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. He served as a volunteer for Hospice of Siouxland. His hobby was woodworking and he enjoyed making and sharing crosses at the Cumming Co. fair and with anyone who came to visit him. You often heard Jacob say, “God Bless You!” Jacob spent his final days at Colonial Haven Nursing Home in Beemer, NE. He loved to sing hymns to the other residents there. Jacob passed away Monday morning November 28th at St. Francis Memorial Hospital West Point NE. Survivors include his sons Mark Sorensen of Kalispell, Montana, Gordon Sorensen (Robin) of Boise, Idaho, and Steven Sorensen (Denise) of Bancroft. He has five grandchildren, Benjamin Sorensen, Katie Hadley (Dan), Andrew Sorensen, Heather Leonard (Josh), and James Sorensen and two great grandchildren Molly Sorensen and Ruby Hadley. Jacob is survived by two brothers Alvin Sorensen (Laura) of Bancroft and Warren Sorensen (Betty) of Big Piney, Wyoming. He was preceded in death by his wife Esther, three sisters, Marie Jahnke, Florence Cook, and Kathryn Petersen and one brother Lyle Sorensen.
