Alice “Becky” Swanson, 85, of Wakefield, Nebraska died on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at the Wakefield Health Care Center in Wakefield, Nebraska. Funeral services for Becky will be held on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at 10:30 A.M. at Salem Lutheran Church in Wakefield; Pastor Darwin Garton will be officiating. The visitation will be held on Tuesday from 3:00 until 8:00 P.M. at the Bressler ~ Munderloh Funeral Home in Wakefield. There will be a prayer service held at 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday evening. Burial will be in the Wakefield Cemetery.
Becky was born in Callaway, Nebraska on April 10, 1926, the daughter of Edgar Coleman Thomas Hoskin and Eliza Bell Young. She was baptized and confirmed in the Episcopal Church in Callaway and graduated from Callaway High School. She then graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln. While in Lincoln, she worked for Wesleyan professors: Dr. Fredstrom and Dr. Deal. She also worked at the State Department of Education and for the law firm of Hammond and Parker. She moved to Wausa, Nebraska, where she taught Business Education for four years in the public school. On August 1, 1950, Becky was united in marriage to Norman Swanson in Callaway, Nebraska. To this union two children were born: Linda and Leslie “Bud”. In 1952, the couple moved to Wakefield, where they operated Swanson Implement Company(an Allis Chalmers farm equipment dealership). Becky was secretary to Superintendent Harry Mills in the Wakefield Community School for a year and then taught Business Education for 23 years at Wakefield until her retirement.
Becky was active at Salem Lutheran Church, serving on Church Council, teaching Sunday School and Bible School, a member of Salem Women on the ELCA, Salem Tape/DVD Ministry, Salem Quilters and XYZ. She was also an active member of Wakefield Community Club, P.E.O. and Delta Kappa Gamma.
Becky is survived by her husband Norman of Wakefield, a daughter Linda Nordby of Tallahassee, FL, and son and his wife Leslie “Bud” and Sandy Swanson of Norfolk, NE, grandchildren Daniel Nordby and wife Rachel, Laura (Nordby) Jackson and husband Earl, Mary (Swanson) Kramer and husband Ben, and Amy Swanson; great grandchildren Colin Kramer, Andrew Nordby, Aliyah Jackson and Peter Nordby; sisters-in-law Gladys Johnson of Trimont, MN and Leona and husband Gene Wischhof of Wausa, NE; brother-in-law Clarence Suhr of Wausa, NE and many nieces and nephews and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Edgar Daniel Hoskin and his wife Margaret (Cobb) Hoskin; half sisters Evelyn (Hoskin) Lammers, Vivian (Hoskin) Harvey and Maxine (Hoskin) Ewing; parents-in-law Otto and Martha Swanson; sister-in-law Helen (Swanson) Suhr and a brother-in-law Allan Johnson.
