Gordon L. Helgren, 82, of Wakefield, Nebraska died on Wednesday, February 23, 2012 at the Heritage of Bel Air Nursing Home in Norfolk, Nebraska. Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 27, 2012 at 10:30 A.M. at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Wayne; Pastor Bob Oleson will be officiating. The visitation will be held on Sunday from 3:00 until 8:00 P.M. at the Bressler – Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Wakefield. The family will be present from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Burial will be in the Wakefield Cemetery.
Gordon was born on April 22, 1929 in Dixon County, Nebraska, the son of Aaron and Helen (Levene) Helgren. He was baptized on August 22, 1929 and confirmed on November 12, 1944 at Salem Lutheran Church in Wakefield.
He attended school at District #8 in Wayne, County and graduated from Wayne High School in 1947. While in school he was a member of "Beat Em All" 4H club. After High School, he farmed, then entered the U.S. Army on March 31, 1952, serving in Korea during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged on March 18, 1954.
Gordon married Darlene Peters on August 14, 1964 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. They farmed near Carroll, NE until 1982 when they moved to a farm near Wakefield. He retired from farming in 2000 and moved to a home near Wakefield. Gordon was an avid sports fan.
Gordon is survived by his wife, Darlene, two step sons, Fred Peters and his wife Sharon of Littleton, CO, and Charles Peters of Wakefield, NE, two step grandaughters, Toni and Rebecca of Littleton CO, step grandson Fred Schreiner and his wife Tanya of Albrightsville, PA and their children Dawson and Dakota, brothers Warren of Columbia, TN, and Gene and his wife Delores of Wayne, NE, as well as many nieces, nephews and close friends.
Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Dorothy Meyer.
