Roland C. Peters, 91, of Pender, Nebraska, passed away on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at the Legacy Gardens Care Center in Pender. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 19, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Pender, Nebraska. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Munderloh~Smith Funeral Home in Pender with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Interment will be in St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery in Pender. Roland was born on the family farm near Oakland, Nebraska, on March 1st, 1921, the son of Carl and Anna (Ropers) Peters. He was baptized at home on April 3, 1921, and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in West Point, NE. He graduated from Oakland High School in 1938. He was a member of Nebraska's 4-H Livestock Judging Team that won a trip to Chicago Livestock show in 1941. On August 2, 1942 he was inducted into the U.S. Army. He served with the 691st Field Artillery Battery as a Tech Sergeant, serving in Europe for 18 months, crossing the Rhine river on Pontoons, as the bridge was blown up. He received the French Croix du Gueree, (Cross of War), the only one in his unit. He arrived home on January 29th, 1946. On March 17th, 1946 he was united in marriage to Marie Lanz at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in West Point. They moved near Pender in 1948. He was a 4-H leader, President of the Farmer's Union Coop of Pender, held various positions in St. John's Lutheran Church in Pender, bowled and golfed. He retired to Pender in 1989. Roland is survived by his wife Marie, daughter Connie Wobken and her husband Ron of Wisner, NE, sons: Roger Peters and his wife Ande of Wisner, Ne, Richard Peters and his wife Karen of Elkhorn, NE, Paul Peters and his wife Carol of Wisner, NE, nine grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, two step grandchildren, and five step great grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Katherine Anderson and her husband Dwain of Oakland, NE. Roland was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother Harvey.
