Gerhardt ( Herbie) Herbolsheimer passed away at the age of 91 on September 30 2007. His last days where at the South Texas Veterans Medical Center, Kerrville, Texas. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 6, 2007 at 10:30 A.M. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Wakefield, Nebraska. The visitation will be held on Friday from 3:00 until 8:00 P.M. at the Bressler ~ Munderloh Funeral Home in Wakefield. Burial will be in the Wakefield Cemetery.
Gerhardt was born Sept. 16, 1916 in the Community of Pierce, Nebraska to Ludwig and Lena (Breyer) Herbolsheimer. Baptized Oct. 18, 1916, Confirmed May 29th 1929. He attended St. John Parochial School till the 8th Grade. He was raised on the family farm during the depression years, worked out for room and broad with the neighbors as a young man. Gary worked as a highway maintenance person until he volunteered for the army.
After induction Gary was sent to Fort Leavenworth Ka and then to Camp Grant ILL. for 7 weeks basic training. He was assined to 48th Surgical 128th Evacuation Hospital for a Medical Aid Person at the front lines. He served at Algeria, France, Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, Normandy, central Europe, Rhineland from 5/21/42 to 11/19/45.
After the war, jobs were hard to find. Gary worked at the Fredrickson Filling Station at Wayne Nebr. for his Sister Rose and brother-in-law Bill Fredrickson. He met Beverly (Boots) Rasmussen there. They married May 31, 1947 at Elk Point, South Dakota at the Loins Lutheran Church. They made their home at Souix City, IA where he worked for Blue Bunny Ice Cream Company. Sandra was born to them on 6/14/1948. They later moved to Wayne Ne. 1948 in were Gary went to work for Carl Otte Construction. Kathy was born to then in 1951. They then moved to Wakefield in 1953 were Gary worked for Jensen & Burdigan.
Gary started his own Construction Company in 1958, Gary's Construction was self owned for 40 years till 1998. In those years he worked for many people, and taught many young men the tools of the trade.
He was a member in:
Veterans of Foreign Wars Life time member of American Legion Post 81 in Wakefield for 60 years Volunteer Fireman and Rescue and helped to build the present Fire Station Served 5 years on The Draft Board in Ponca at that time it was discontinued Member of St Johns Lutheran Church, where he has continued his membership
Gary and Beverly held a 50 yr Reunion at Souix City in 1997 for his Medical Unit of the Afician and European Theater. Historical Medical Unit Book (Heroes from the Attic) was placed in Legion Post 81 in Wakefield Nebr and Pierce Nebr Historical Society Museum by Gary and Beverly.
They moved to Kerrville in Sept 2001to be near there daughter and her family. Gerhardt gave his life to his, family, Church and his work. He was a loving Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather. He will be missed. He believe that Christ held the answers to a good life and a long life.
He is survived by his wife Beverly of Kerrville, Daughter Sandra and husband Jim of Lakehills, Grandson James and his wife Lisa and Great Granddaughters Alexandria and Makenzie, Grandson Chad and his wife Tricia and Great Granddaughters Sydney and Emma of San Antonio, Texas.
One sister Lyleth Meyer of Pierce, brother Lyle and wife Lavern of Tilden, brother Louis and wife Pat of Hartington, and three sister-laws Ardith, and Lenis of Pierce and Evelyn of Windside, many nieces and nephews.
Proceeded in death by his parents Ludwig and Lena Herbolsheimer 2 sisters Edna Aubert, Rose Fredrickson 4 brothers Earl, Eldon, Harlan, Lawrence Herbolsheimer and daughter Kathy.
