Calvin was born on December 20, 1924 in Walthill, the son of Charles Clifton Dunn and Lila Hahlbech, one of two girls and five boys. He graduated in 1942 from Walthill Public School. In April 1944, he joined the army and served in Europe and was discharged in June of 1946. In 1946, he attended Reppert’s school of auctioneers at Decatur, Indiana. In 1948, he attended Stevenson Body and fender school in Kansas City, Missouri. On December 18, 1949, he married Margaret Tyrrell in the Methodist Church in Pender. He worked as a farm hand for two years. He started farming at Walthill for ten years and then moved to Pender to the Tyrrell farm. He was blessed with five boys. Margaret and Calvin were sponsors for the new Thurston County Rural Youth Program.
As the boys got older, he took a job with Rink Enterprises, later Rink Manufacturing. He became the factory representative, where he attended many Midwest farm shows. Later he went to work for Triple “C” Products of Bancroft. Margaret died in 1982, after a long battle with cancer. He retired in Pender, and enjoyed playing cards with his friends. He loved to sing, first with the Methodist Men, and later with the senior group in Emerson. Calvin’s’ friends were important to him. With their help, Calvin put together a book about fifty years after graduation of his class mates. His friends also helped put together a book about his thirty close Army buddies. He also spent the time to write one about his life. He had one more close friend, which he never forgot. She was the one who cleaned his hotel room at Badgastien, Austria. Fifty years after, Calvin found her and made two trips back to Europe to visit her. Calvin dearly loved his bus tours. With his Army tour, he has been to all the fifty states, plus Mexico and six countries in Europe.
Calvin is survived by his five sons: Doug and Karen of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Randy and Diann of Pender, Nebraska, Stan and Brenda of Schuyler, Nebraska, Jerald and Penny of Lakin, Kansas, and Wesley and Charlene of Thurston, Nebraska, nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, a sister Caroline Gustafson of Walthill, Nebraska, two brothers Lewis and Catherine of Plattsmouth, Nebraska and Clifton and Carol of Walthill, Nebraska.
