Elmer was born on December 30, 1918 at the family farm southeast of Pender. He was the sixth child of Lewis and Addie (Watterman) Moore. Elmer lived his entire life in Thurston County, and was engaged in farming and farm interests throughout all 93 years.
Elmer attended rural schools and graduated from the 8th Grade from the "Stimson School" on May 19, 1932. He began working for area farmers and enjoyed telling about his first jobs and what he earned at them. During drought years, he went to North Dakota and Iowa with his friends to find work. He was quite pleased to have participated in the last corn handpicking contest held in Thurston County on October 22, 1941, and could describe in detail the events of that day. In 1934, he moved with his family to the farm northwest of Walthill where he would live for the rest of his life. Elmer was baptized and confirmed in the United Presbyterian Church in Winnebago on April 9, 1939. He later joined the Walthill Presbyterian Church, which was later merged with the Winnebago Church and renamed "Faith United Presbyterian Church".
Elmer met Miriam E. Smith in 1945 at a house dance near Homer. He and Miriam were married on March 6, 1946 in the home of Rev. Gradus Aalberts at Winnebago. Miriam had come from Binghamton, New York to complete her training as a nurse at the Winnebago Hospital through the Cadet Nursing Program. Three children were born to Elmer and Miriam: Everett, Shirley and Sharon.
Elmer served on the school board for District #8, "Sunny Slope School", and was an elder in the Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping his entire life, and loved sharing stories and pictures from all three. He never met a person he couldn't visit with, and no one was a stranger for long when talking to Elmer. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Elmer was a good neighbor his whole life, and was kind and generous to all.
Elmer is survived by his children and their spouses: Everett and Sandy Moore of Winnebago, NE, Shirley and Glenn Kaufman of Kenneth City, FL, and Sharon and Roger Boeckenhauer of Concord, NE. Eight grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren also survive him.
Elmer was preceded in death by his wife, Miriam in 2000, his parents, brothers: Harley, Henry and infant Clifford, sisters: Ella, Laura, DeLila, Dorothy, Alverna and Hazel, and infant granddaughter Mindy Leigh Moore.
