Vernon L. Mackey, 90, of West Point, Nebraska, formerly of Bancroft, died Saturday, March 30, 2013 at St. Francis Memorial Hospital in West Point. Funeral services for Vernon will be held Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bancroft with Pastor Philip Hale officiating. Burial following at the Bancroft Cemetery. Visitation this Friday from 3:00 until 8:00 P.M. at the Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Bancroft with his family present from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M.
Vernon was born December 12, 1922, the son of Louis and Augusta (Zobel) Mackey. He was baptized January 11, 1923 and confirmed May 23, 1937 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bancroft. He attended rural District 80 in Cuming County. On September 11, 1949, Vernon married Laverne Abendroth and they resided on the family farm northwest of Bancroft for 35 years raising their four children. Vernon farmed and worked for the Cuming County ASCS Office. In 1983, Vernon and Laverne moved to Bancroft. Laverne died August 23, 1999. Vernon moved to St. Joseph’s Retirement Community in June 2009 and resided there until his death.
Vernon is survived by his children: Wanda (Raymond) Wollberg of Omaha, NE, Diana (Terry) Pedersen of Plymouth, MN, Milon Mackey of Oakland, CA, and Kevin (Rose) Mackey of Lincoln, NE. He is survived by seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren: Brian (Allison) Pedersen, their son Henry; Jeffrey (Shelly) Pedersen, their sons, Clifford, Eugene and Karl; Leanna (Mark) Meyer, their daughters, Natalie and Karalyn; Aaron Wollberg; Jason (Kirsten) Wollberg; Krista Pedersen and Brittany Wollberg. Vernon is survived by his sister, Lois Lueders of Pender, NE.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Augusta, his wife, Laverne, and infant son, Leon, in 1955.
