Ima Jean Tonjes

Ima Jean Virginia Lee (Mackey) Tonjes, 83, of Bancroft, Nebraska, passed from this life on April 29, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa. Funeral services will be Saturday, May 4, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bancroft, NE, with pastor Philip Hale officiating. Visitation will be held Friday (5/3/13) from 3-8 p.m. at Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Bancroft, NE. Burial will be in the Bancroft City Cemetery in Bancroft, NE. Ima Jean was born in Bancroft, NE, on January 16, 1930, to Iva (Cook) and Oscar Mackey. She graduated from Bancroft High School in 1947. From there, she apprenticed and received her hair stylist license which she maintained for the rest of her life. She married Myron H.J. Tonjes on June 16, 1951. The couple were blessed with three children and Ima Jean put all her efforts into being a good wife and mother. She is especially remembered for her superb baking skills in making cinnamon rolls, breads and decorated cakes. Ima Jean was also noted for her crocheting, especially with afghans and pot holders. She was very generous with sharing the fruits of her labors. She loved collecting cookbooks. Ima Jean was preceded in death by her brother, Norman Mackey; her parents, Iva and Oscar Mackey; and her devoted husband, Myron. She is survived by her children Karmen (Randy) Scott of Sarasota, FL, Holly (Paul) Schenk of Gladstone, MO, and Kevin (Jo) Tonjes of Bancroft, NE. Her grandchildren are Darin (Deb) Greckel of Omaha, NE, Lillie and Adam Schenk of Gladstone, MO, and Blake Tonjes of Bancroft, NE. Her great-grandchildren are Paige, Hunter and Pierce Greckel of Omaha, NE. She is also survived by her brothers Leland (Lois) Mackey of Bancroft, NE, and Ron (Leeta) Mackey of Surprise, AZ, and special friend Odin Anderson of Rosalie, NE.
