Margaret Patterson, 103, of Wakefield, Nebraska died on Thursday, May 2, 2013 at the Wakefield Health Care Center in Wakefield, Nebraska. Funeral services for Margaret will be held on Thursday, May 16, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. at the Wakefield Presbyterian Church; Pastor Charity Potter will be officiating. The visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral at the church. Burial will be in the Wakefield Cemetery. Margaret was born on October 1, 1909, at home in Wakefield, Nebraska, the daughter of Daniel and Cassie (Rakow) Patterson. She attended and graduated from Wakefield High School and later from Wayne State College. She began her teaching career in Wayne County, later moving to Iowa, where she taught in O’Brien County and in the Ocheyedan Public School. She completed her 45 years in teaching with 30 years in the Worthington, Minnesota Public Schools as a 6th grade teacher. Margaret retired at the age of 65 and returned to Wakefield. After her retirement, Margaret enjoyed traveling. She and her friends traveled to Mexico, Guatemala, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Hawaii, Florida and many other places. Margaret was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Honorary Teachers’ Sorority, the P.E.O. Sisterhood, and Variety Club. She was a long time member of the First United Presbyterian Church, where she served as an Elder, and was a member of the United Presbyterian Women and the Ruth Circle. She served in the Wakefield Community as a member of the Hospital Auxiliary Board and a member of the library board for many years. She is survived by one niece, Mrs. Gary(Sandra) Eckles and one great nephew, Brett Andrew Eckles of Corona Del Mar, California, as well as a great-great niece, her namesake, Caitlyn Margaret Eckles, age six, of Costa Mesa, California. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Irvin.
