Ethel W. English, 88, of Pender, Nebraska passed away on Monday, October 20, 2008 at the Pender Community Hospital in Pender, Nebraska. Funeral services for Ethel will be held on Thursday, October 23, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Pender, with the Rev. Steven Tjarks officiating. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Munderloh Funeral Home in Pender. Interment will be in the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Cemetery in Pender.
Ethel Weibke Luhr English was born on September 19, 1920 on a farm about five miles southwest of Pender. She was the eighth of twelve children born to Herman and Katie (Gilster) Luhr. She was baptized on May 29, 1921 and confirmed on March 24, 1934, both at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church southwest of Pender. She attended Cuming County School District #57, near her home.
On November 28, 1952 she married Drexel English at Fremont, Nebraska. They started farming in 1953. After four years, they had a farm sale and moved to California. In 1959 they moved back to Nebraska and began farming again. They lived on their farm until 1994, when they moved into Pender. Drexel passed away on September 25th, 2006.
Ethel is survived by a brother, Edward Luhr and his wife Betty of Caleb Mountain, California, nieces: Lydia Moller of Sonoma, CA; Lorna Smith and her husband Gary Flandi also of Sonoma, CA; and Deborah Acquistatate and her husband Jeffrey of Napa, California. He is also survived by a nephew Lonnie Smith of Park City, Utah, a sister-in-law Sharon Utemark of West Point, NE, and a brother-in-law, Dwayne Toelle also of West Point.
Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Drexel, four brothers, Lloyd, Clarence, Carl, and Raymond Luhr and six sisters, Alverna, Loretta and Cecilia Luhr, Vivian Walters, Audrey Smith and Evelyn Luhr.
