Kenneth W. Hartwig, 82 of Pender, Nebraska fought a courageous battle against cancer and lost the fight on Thursday, November 19, 2015 at UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s Hospital in Sioux City, IA. Memorial services for Ken will be held on Monday, November 23, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pender; Pastor Miles Ruch will be officiating. The visitation will begin one hour prior to the service on Monday. Burial will be at a later date at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church Cemetery near Pender. Memorials are suggested to the family for future designation. Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home of Pender is in charge of the arrangements.
Ken was born on July 12, 1933 at the Picotte Memorial Hospital in Walthill, NE, the son of William and Alice (Einemann) Hartwig. In 1950 he graduated from Walthill High School. Shortly after graduation he joined the United States Army and served in Korea. On October 21, 1956, he was united in marriage to Vivian Pieper. To this union four children were born: Katherine, Sheryl, Christine and William. In the early 1970s, Ken became owner operator of the garbage business in Pender. He also drove the school bus, worked as a janitor at the Pender High School and was an associate realtor with NE Nebraska Realty. The family moved into their current residence in 1978.
Ken was a collector of many things. He enjoyed fishing, morel mushroom hunting, attending auctions and old cars. He was a member of the Pender V.F.W, the American Legion, serving as Commander, President of the Nebraska Token Club, member of the Classic Car Club of Onawa and a lifelong member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. What he enjoyed most was spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years Vivian of Pender, daughters: Katherine (Earl) Snyder of Sioux City, IA, Sheryl (Donovan) Ehrman of Greeley, CO, Christine Glissman of Pender and a son William (Karen) Hartwig of Fremont, NE. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Lisa (James) Glissman-Mayner, Emily Glissman, Quinn Ehrman, Earl “Alex” Snyder, Kathryn Ehrman, Hannah (Seth) DeMoss, Noel Johnson, Autumn Johnson, and three great grandchildren: Derek, Pheobe and Mia Glissman-Mayner, sister Karolyn Sartin of Ringgold, GA; brother Willis (Bettty) Hartwig of Longmont, CO, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and former son-in-law Brad Glissman.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents and his grandson Brian Weston Glissman.
