Emma M. Brown, 88, of Wakefield, Nebraska died on Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at the Wakefield Health Care Center in Wakefield, Nebraska. A funeral service for Emma will be held on Monday, April 13, 2009 at 10:30 A.M. at Salem Lutheran Church in Wakefield; Pastor Gretchen Ritola will be officiating. The visitation will be held on Sunday from 3:00 until 8:00 P.M. at the Bressler ~ Munderloh Funeral Home in Wakefield. The family will be present from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. on Sunday evening with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. Burial will be in the Wakefield Cemetery.
Emma Marie Lydia Brown was born on June 4, 1920 near Emerson, Nebraska, the daughter of John and Emma (Johnston) Heckens. She attended rural school near Emerson and graduated from Emerson High School. She also attended Wayne State College. Emma taught at several rural schools in the Wakefield and Concord area. On March 29, 1941, Emma and Erwin Brown were married at Salem Lutheran Church in Wakefield. The couple farmed near Wakefield and moved into town in 1982. Erwin died on July 19, 1998. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for more than fifty years. Emma was active in her church. She was a member of the church circle and the Home Circle Club. She enjoyed quilting and was a member of the LCW.
Emma is survived by two sons, Gene and Rae Brown and Lyle Brown, all of Wakefield; two daughters, Peggy Kubik of Wakefield and Phyllis and Rudy Dufek of Omaha; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother Henry Heckens of Fort Collins, Colorado.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Erwin, her parents, two grandchildren, Kenneth and Connie Kubik, two sisters and six brothers.
