Mavis A. (Heuerman) Vanderwerf, 94, of Pender, NE passed away Thursday, May 5, 2016 at Legacy Garden and Rehabilitation Center in Pender. Funeral services will be Monday, May 9, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pender; Pastor Miles Ruch will be officiating. The visitation will be Sunday May 8, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Pender. Memorials may be directed to the family for future designation. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Pender.
Mavis was born June 15, 1921 in Pender, NE to John and Ada (Glissman) Heuerman. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and graduated from Pender High School in 1938. On May 11, 1948, she married Merle (Vandy) Vanderwerf and the couple had four daughters.
Mavis worked for the Department of Social Services in Pender until her retirement in 1986. She was the church organist at St. Mark’s for 35 years and was a member of the VFW Auxiliary. She loved music, crossword puzzles, playing cards, and watching all sports, especially baseball. Her greatest joy was time spent with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughters, Mary (Steve) Meyer of Pender, NE, Jane (Lee) Tonjes of Pender, NE, Rita (David) Hogsett of Lamar, NE; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; niece, Cathy Levine of San Francisco, CA; and sister-in-law, Wilma Vanderwerf of Sacramento, CA.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Merle; daughter, Lisa; sister, Iona Tonjes; and brother-in-law, Milo Vanderwerf.
