Gladys M. (Dixon) Ostrand, 100, of Bancroft, Nebraska, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, December 20, 2009 at the Pender Care Centre in Pender, Nebraska. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 23, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bancroft, NE with the Rev. Philip Hale officiating. A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Munderloh Funeral Home in Bancroft. Interment will be in the Bancroft Cemetery in Bancroft.
Gladys was born on November 1, 1909 in rural Bancroft, the daughter of Oral and Cora (Beaudett) Dixon. She was baptized and confirmed by Pastor Laure at Oakland Lutheran Church. Her confirmation verse was Isaiah 3:21 “This is the way, walk ye in it.”, and this is how she lived her life, walking in faith.
Gladys graduated from Bancroft High School in 1928 and from Covenant School of Nursing in Omaha, in 1931. She worked at Covenant Hospital in Omaha and Fremont Hospital in Fremont. She then worked for Dr. Heacock in the Bancroft Area until her marriage to Rodney Ostrand at the Methodist Church west of Oakland on September 4, 1935. Rodney died February 6, 1985.
Gladys was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, the Altar Guild, and the Senior Center all in Bancroft. She was a past member of the Burt County Extension Club. She had been a life-long resident of the Bancroft, Ne area and lived on the Ostrand farm south of Bancroft from February 16, 1935 until the fall of 2009 when she moved to the Pender Care Centre.
Gladys is survived by daughters: Judy Twillman of Sioux City, Iowa, and Linda Barada and her husband Jim of Fremont, NE. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Tami, Amy, Tim and Troy, five great grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Rodney, an infant son, Robert Rodney, four sisters, one brother, a great grandson Andrew, and a son-in-law Dale Twillman.
