Click here to view the memorial video.Alfred A. “Al” Hitz, 91 of Wakefield passed away on Thursday, January 21, 2010 at the Wakefield Health Care Center. Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 25, at 10:30 a.m., at Salem Lutheran Church in Wakefield, with the Rev. Gretchen Ritola officiating. A visitation will be held on Sunday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Bressler-Munderloh Funeral Home in Wakefield, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Interment will be in the Wakefield Cemetery.
Al was born on April 30, 1918 in Pierce, Nebraska, the son of Erie and Ella (Pittack) Hitz. The family moved to Wakefield in 1936 and opened a Mobil service station which he helped his father run. In June of 1941 he joined the U.S. Army, along with his best friend, Bob Felt. He served in San Francisco, and Kentucky before serving in Italy During World War II. He was honorably discharged in November of 1945, and returned home to help his father run the service station. He married Lorraine Felt, (the sister of his best friend) on October 27, 1944 in Lawton, Oklahoma. The couple made their home in Wakefield. In the 70’s, Al sold the service station and went to work driving a truck for Heritage Homes of Wayne, Ne. Besides the service station, Al also inherited selling Cemetery Monuments from is father-in-law. He continued to sell monuments for J.F. Bloom Monument Company up to the time of his passing. During his working years he also drove a school bus for the Wakefield School System. After retirement he also assisted the Bressler and later Bressler-Munderloh Funeral Homes in conducting funeral services.
During his life in Wakefield he volunteered with many organizations, including: serving on the Wakefield School Board, and the Wakefield Hospital Board. He was also an active member of the Lyons Club, VFW, Community Club, and Salem Lutheran Church.
Al is survived by his wife, Lorraine, sons: Paul and his wife Joan of Houston, Texas, David and his wife Stacey of Aurora, Colorado, and Mark and his wife Rendy of Dallas, Texas. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Ashley, Laura, Zachary and Ethan Hitz, a sister, Elaine Holm of Wakefield, sisters-in-law LaVonne Felt of Wakefield and Lois Felt of Denver, CO, and a brother-in-law, Clayton Andrews of Norfolk, NE.
Al was preceded in death by his parents.
