Bruce Marr, 81, of Walthill NE, formerly of Bancroft, died Tues. Nov 30th, 2010 at the West Point Living Center. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM on Monday, Dec. 6th at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Walthill with Father Mike Eckley officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Walthill. Visitation will be all day Saturday and Sunday until 5 PM at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Walthill. Vigil service will be Sunday night at 7:30 PM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Point.
Bruce Marr was born on April 10th, 1929 in Walthill NE to Claude and Helen (Sauser) Marr. He grew up in Walthill and graduated from high school there in 1946. He enlisted in the US Army that summer and was trained in Ft. Dicks NJ as a military policeman and was deployed to Nagasaki, Japan. He was honorably discharged in 1948. He graduated from Creighton University in Omaha in 1952 with a Bachelor’s degree in business. He married Joan Branigan in Omaha in 1951. They later divorced. He later married Loretta Harlan. Bruce was in the grocery business for 23 years. He was a butcher and had a locker/grocery business, owning Marr’s Star Market Locker Service in Bancroft for 17 years. He later was the business manager for the Omaha Tribe in Macy. He also taught business classes at the Community College in Winnebago. In his semi-retirement he owned a lawn business, drove a charter bus, and was a truck driver. He was a member of the American Legion and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Walthill and former mayor of Walthill. He moved to the West Point Living Center in Sept. of 2009. Bruce had a great love for his family and friends, his animals, and especially his fellow man. He never met a stranger and was most at peace when surrounded by those who loved him.
Survivors include his wife Loretta of Walthill, sons Dan of Earl, N.C, Jim (Twyla) of Norfolk, NE, Tom (Patti) of Whiting, IA, Terry (Brenda) of Wichita, KS, Rick of Jacksonville, FL, Marty of Belleview, FL, Ron of Ocala, FL, and Garrett (Richelle) of Winnebago, NE. Daughters include Diane (Dana) Leffler of West Point, NE, Michelle (Dan) Kelley of Simpsonville, SC, Cathy Kinder of Coudersport, PA, Ariane (Derrick) Grant of Macy, NE and Mandy Marr of Sundance WY. He had 39 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by 3 step-children and several step-grandchildren, brother Hugh (Bernadean) of Dodge, NE, and sister Ruth (Frank) McCabe of Carroll, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Sandra, son David, and grandson Matthew. Also preceding him in death are siblings and spouses Warren and Myrna Marr, Jane and Dale Bring, sister-in law Dorothy Marr, and brother-in-law Gary Tessmer.
