Alice was born to Alvin and Helen (Olson) Kelly on March 19, 1929, near Macy, NE. She attended Rosalie Public School. She left high school early to work in Sioux City at JcPenney as a shoe sales lady. Alice has always loved shoes! She did earn her high school diploma later in life and completed her GED in 2005.

Alice met the love of her life, Ivan Schmedding, in 1948 in Walthill, NE when they went to a dance at the Legion Hall. They dated for two years, spending many nights dancing at the Tomba Ballroom and Shore Acres Ballroom. They had their Thursday nights reserved for square dances, round dances, two steps, and polkas.

On February 21, 1950, Alice and Ivan were united in marriage at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Winnebago, NE. They moved onto the farm outside of Winnebago where they lived throughout their marriage. In June 1954, their only child, Debra Kay, was born.

Alice and Ivan were members of the neighborhood pinochle club. Alice was active in the Altar Society of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Walthill, the neighborhood birthday club, the extension club, and bowling leagues. She enjoyed her beautiful flower and vegetable gardens and helping with livestock and fieldwork on the farm. In 1966, Alice and Ivan bought part ownership of the Gambles Store in Walthill with Kenny English.

Alice’s greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her son-in-law Stan Modlin and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Bradley (Devon) with children Presley & Brady of Bakersfield, CA; Jason (Amy) with children Karrena, Raegan, Ryan, & Reed of Dakota City, NE; Melissa Johnson with children Justice, Jaxon, & Grace of Bancroft, NE; Wesley (Ashley) with children Logan, Landon, Luke, & Brooklyn of Omaha, NE; Jarrod (Allison) with children Brett & Bryce of Omaha, NE; and her great-great grandson Dawson.
