Arden "Jug" Shadbolt

Arden "Jug" Shadbolt, 90, of Pender, NE died on Saturday, October 19, 2019 at Legacy Garden Rehabilitation and Living Center in Pender, NE.  Memorial services for Jug will be held on Wednesday, October 23, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Pender, NE, Father Gerald Leise will be officiating.  The visitation will be held on Wednesday morning from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the church.  Burial will be at a later date.

Jug was born on his aunt’s farm in Newcastle, Nebraska to Roy and Grace (Kollbaum) Shadbolt. He attended Pender Public Schools. At an early age, around 6-years-old, he started work delivering milk in a red coaster wagon with his sister, Betty, which is when everyone started calling him Jug! Jug then worked for Fred Heese in the creamery. He also delivered beer for Busch Distributing in Pender, and trucked for Charley Dye as well. He worked at Lorensen’s Service Station as the parts man and bookkeeper.

In 1951, Jug was drafted in to the United States Army and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands in Alaska during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1953 and then returned to Pender to work at Lorenson’s Service Station. Jug later bought the business in the mid-1970s and changed the name to Shadbolt’s Service Company. In the late 1990s, Jug sold the business and began enjoying a well-earned retirement by mowing at the Pender Twin Creeks golf course for several years. Jug was elected to Pender City Council and served for a total of 27 years. He was mayor of Pender for a total of 20 years at different times during his tenure. Jug helped get Pender the dike, new water tower, new maintenance building, and water treatment plant. He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Pender and a member of the American Legion and VFW.

Jug married Margaret Stewart of Walthill, Nebraska on June 4th, 1955, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Walthill. Father O’Sullivan performed the ceremony. To this union, two daughters were born, Jean and Joan.

Jug is survived by many family members who love him: his wife, Margaret of Pender; daughter, Jean Linafelter of Sioux City, IA; grandchildren, Allison Linafelter of Sioux City, IA, Daniel Sherlock of Emerson, NE, Jonna (Kenny) Mellem of Sioux Falls, SD, and great-grandson Leo Mellem of Sioux Falls, SD; brothers, Dallas Shadbolt of Aurora, CO and Robert (Marilyn) Shadbolt of Roy, UT; sisters, Norma Schlickbernd of Beemer, NE and Wanda (Gail) Peterson of Crofton, NE; sisters-in-law, Frances Shadbolt of Fremont, NE, Anita Shadbolt of Omaha, NE, and Florence Majeski of Algonquin, IL; Brothers-in-law Clemons “Shorty” Spindler and Jim Stewart and friend Barb Basham of Omaha, NE; and many nieces and nephews.

Proceeding him in death are his parents, Roy and Grace (Kollbaum) Shadbolt; daughter, Joan Moore; granddaughter, Erin Jean Linafelter; son-in-law, Elliot Linafelter; brothers, Roscoe “Rock” Shadbolt, Donald Shadbolt, and Ervin “Bus” Shadbolt; sister, Betty Spindler; sister-in-law Fran Shadbolt; and brother-in-law Max Mevert. Jug will be missed by many.
