Barbara J. (Larson) Schwarten, 87, of Elkhorn, Nebraska passed away Monday, December 3, 2018 at Life Care Center of Elkhorn. Funeral services will be Friday, December 7, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at Resurrection Evangelical Lutheran Church; Pastor James Sells will be officiating (153 S. McKenna Ave, Gretna, NE) with lunch immediately following. The visitation will be Thursday, December 6, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Resurrection Evangelical Lutheran Church in Gretna. Burial will be at 3:00 p.m. in Rose Hill Cemetery in Emerson, NE. Following the burial, there will be a reception at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Emerson. Memorials may be directed to the family for future designation. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Emerson, NE.
Barbara was born September 15, 1931 to Archie and Gladys (Renander) Larson. She graduated from Pender High School. On June 23, 1951, Barbara married Delmar Schwarten of Emerson. She worked as a city clerk in Emerson for over 36 years. In 1992, Barbara moved to Ashland, NE and was a city clerk before becoming the mayor for eight years. She enjoyed baking cookies, especially Christmas cookies, and playing cards, especially pitch.
Barbara is survived by her sons, Steven (Cheryl) Schwarten of Loma Linda, MO, William “Bill” (Debra) Schwarten of Omaha, NE; sister Bette (Earl) Wilke of Omaha, NE; brother, Larry Larson of Omaha, NE; six grandchildren, Ami, Jon (Nikki), Josh, Dustin (Jyll), Joshua (Michaela), Adam; ten great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Delmar; parents; infant son, David; sister, Sharon Larson, and sister-in-law, Karen Larson.
