Dolores A. Johnson

Dolores Arlene (Wheeler) Johnson, 90, of Wakefield, Nebraska died on Monday, November 13, 2017 at the Wakefield Health Care Center in Wakefield, NE.  Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 17, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at Salem Lutheran Church in Wakefield. A visitation will be held Thursday, November 16, 2017 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Salem Lutheran Church.  Burial will be in the Wakefield Cemetery in Wakefield.  Memorials are suggested to the family for future designation.  Arrangements are under the direction of Bressler – Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Wakefield. Dolores was born on December 8, 1926 in Ipswich, SD, the daughter of Basil Dewey and Mabel Mae (Hinds) Wheeler. She was baptized on June 6, 1927 at the First Congregational Church in Ipswich, SD. She became a member of the Allen Methodist Church in 1930 and joined the Salem Lutheran Church in November 1947. Dolores attended school in Allen and Oakdale near Waterbury graduating from Allen High School in 1944 with a certificate to teach at country schools. She taught one year at Rose Hill School and two years at Sunnyside School. It was at Sunnyside School where she met her future husband, Harold who had just been discharged from the Navy. Dolores and Harold were married June 29, 1947, at the Allen Methodist Church.  The couple moved to Harold’s childhood farm, where they lived for the next 45 plus years. After their retirement in 1992 they moved into Wakefield. Dolores taught Sunday school and was active in various church organizations and functions. When not busy being a farm wife, she enjoyed the neighborhood card club, square dancing, gardening and yard work, “fancy work” and family genealogy. Dolores worked at the Wakefield Drug Store from 1969 to 1989. Prior to working at the drug store she worked at Waldbaum’s. Mostly, she enjoyed spending time with her three grandsons. Dolores is survived by: son, Ronald and his wife Melody Johnson of Arvada, CO.; daughter, Michele and husband Clyde Long of Omaha, NE.; grandsons: Kelly and wife Tricia (Peel) Johnson, Jason and Brandon Long; great-granddaughters, Ava and Anara Johnson, sister Patricia (Wheeler) Nygen and husband Lowell of Sioux City, IA, sister-in-law Donella Johnson of Wayne, NE and a host of relatives and friends. Dolores was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
