Donald E. Starzl, 75, of Yankton, South Dakota passed away on Saturday, September 14, 2024, surrounded by his family at his home in Yankton after a battle with cancer. The visitation for Don will be on Sunday, September 22, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., with a prayer service at 6:00 p.m. at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Yankton. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, September 23, 2024, at Christ the King Lutheran Church. Burial will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Emerson. In Lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the family for future designation. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh - Smith Funeral Home.
Don was born on December 2, 1948, in Wakefield, NE, the son of Clarence and Evelyn (Koopman) Starzl. He graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic School in Emerson, NE in 1966. He then attended college in Minneapolis, earning an associate degree as a Laboratory/X-Ray Technician. On April 24, 1970, he was united in marriage to Nancy Steele at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Emerson, NE. Together they raised two daughters, Jayni and Kristin. They lived in Creighton before moving to Norfolk and Randolph, NE. He worked as an X-ray and Ultrasound Tech in Osmond, NE for many years. He worked for Medison in Sioux Falls, SD before moving to Yankton, SD. For the past thirteen years, Don and Nancy have managed the Yankton Missouri River KOA Campground in Yankton. He was an avid Husker fan. They attended Husker baseball games for many years. He never missed watching Husker football on TV with his family.
Don is survived by his wife of 54 years, Nancy of Yankton, SD; daughters, Jayni (Earl) Whipple of Omaha, NE, Kristin (Kevin) Atkinson of Silsbee, TX; five grandchildren, Riley (Kayla) McFadden of Norfolk, NE, Kaleigh Weaver of Clemson, SC, Cade Atkinson, Cole Atkinson, Kierce Atkinson all of Silsbee, TX; great-granddaughter Elise McFadden; sisters, Theresa Anderson of Emerson, NE, Lori Peters of Chandler, AZ, Roni Norman of Lincoln, NE; brothers, Patrick (Terri) Starzl of Chandler, AZ, Doug (Dana) Starzl of Kearney, MO, Mark (Marci) Starzl of Lincoln, NE; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins, as well as his best 4 legged pal, Charlie.
He was preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law, Forrest and Bernadine Steele; brother, Mike Starzl; sister, Lynn Jepsen; grandson Creed Atkinson; and brothers-in-law, Warren Steele and Rich Anderson.
