Gary D Newton

Due to Covid-19 State of Nebraska protocols, the visitation to the public has been canceled.

Gary D. Newton, 72, of Laurel, NE died on Wednesday, April 1, 2020 at UnityPoint St. Luke’s in Sioux City, IA.  Due to directed protocol put into effect by the State of Nebraska, the visitation for the general public has been canceled.  We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause but ask for the sake of the family to please sign the online guest register.  A private graveside service will be held on Monday at Laurel Cemetery in Laurel, NE.  In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to the family for future designation.  Arrangements are under the direction of Bressler – Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Wakefield.

Gary was born in Bloomfield, NE, the son of Alvin and Blanche (Seyl) Newton.  While Gary was young, the family moved to Laurel, NE.  in 1965, he graduated from Laurel High School.  On September 1, 1967, Gary was united in marriage to Sally Sue Smith in Laurel, NE.  He joined the Air National Guard and was sent to Vietnam from 1968 until 1969.  Gary worked in construction from the time he was 14 years old, eventually owning his own business.  He helped renovate and build dream houses for many people over the years.  Gary had a gift and a talent for building, that helped change Laurel’s landscape.  He retired from construction at the age of 70.  He loved all sports, Nebraska Football, the Green Bay Packers and the New York Yankees.  Most of all he enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren’s activities.  Gary was a member of the Laurel Cemetery Board, the Laurel VFW and Cedar View Country Club.  He enjoyed bowling and golfing and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Sally of Laurel, NE; daughters, Angie (Scott) Rath of Laurel, NE, Amy (Phil) Nicolas of Spicer, MN, Katie (Ryan) Kvols of Laurel, NE; grandchildren, Riley Lund of Laurel, NE, Shelby (Trent) Bottolfsen of Omaha, NE, Hannah Lund of Omaha, Delaney and Sutton Ehlers of Laurel, NE, Jake Rath of Laurel, NE, Alex Kvols of Laurel, NE; great grandchildren, Abel Potosnyak of Laurel, NE, Hayden and Beckett Bottolfsen of Omaha, NE.  Gary is also survived by a brother, Wayne Newton of Iowa; nephew, Dusty Newton of Kearney, NE; niece, Tasha McIlnay of Kearney, NE; and his best pal, his dog Beth.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, and brother Jim in 1952.
