Karen Sherer

Wakefield, Nebraska

Karen Sherer, 86, of Wakefield, NE passed away on Monday, July 22, 2024, at the Wakefield Health Care Center in Wakefield, NE. Abiding by her wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of life gathering will be held at 502 Maple St. in Wakefield, beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 10, 2024. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Wakefield.

Karen was born on January 23, 1938, in Coleridge, NE, the daughter of Harlan and Mildred (Gregerson) Ulrich. Following her graduation from Coleridge High School, Karen was united in marriage to Larry Sherer on January 30, 1959. The couple lived in Coleridge, where Karen worked for at the county courthouse in the treasurer’s office. In 1962, they moved to Wakefield, NE, where she worked for 26 years at MG Waldbaum’s, serving in the front office as the payroll clerk. Karen and Larry started Sherer’s Country Gardens, where they sold handcrafted evergreen Christmas wreaths. Karen handmade every bow and took pride in decorating every wreath. They also raised fruits and vegetables, selling them at several farmer’s markets. Karen was a longtime member of the United Presbyterian Church in Wakefield. She enjoyed gardening, canning, watching birds, reading and cooking. She also loved the time spent with her family and her dogs.

Karen is survived by her husband of 65 years, Larry Sherer of Wakefield, NE; sons, Charles (Carla) Sherer of Columbus, NE, Joedy Sherer of Wakefield, NE; daughters, Julie Sherer of Wakefield, NE, Cathy (Mike) Giffrow of Emerson, NE; fourteen grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; brother, Wayne Ulrich of Wayne, NE; sister-in-law, Carol Ulrich of Cumberland Furnace, TN; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harlan and Mildred; an infant son; brother, Dean Ulrich; and a sister-in-law, Karen “Cookie” Ulrich.
