Marlene Faye (Johnson) Young, 85, of Beemer, NE passed away on Monday, April 15, 2019 at the Pender Community Hospital in Pender, NE. Funeral services will be Friday, April 19, 2019, at 10:30 a.m. at the Methodist Church in Wisner, NE; Pastor Coral Parmenter will be officiating. The visitation will be Wednesday, April 17, 2019 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Pender. The burial will be at 2:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Norfolk, NE. Memorials may be directed to the family for future designation. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Bancroft, NE.

Marlene was born December 27, 1933 to Russell A. and Mildred (Anderson) Johnson on a farm in rural Wayne County, NE. She received her education in rural schools in Pierce District 68, Madison District 30, and Madison District 26. She was a member of and confirmed at the Fairview Methodist Church in rural Madison, NE and confirmed there in March of 1948. There, she sang in the choir and attended the Methodist Youth Fellowship. She was a first member of the Fairview Livestock 4-H Club, and entered several prize-winning beef cattle there. She was also a news reporter.

Marlene married her first husband, Harvey Roger Mohnson on October 15, 1950 in Madison, NE. They farmed and were employed by farmers in Wayne, Stanton, and Madison Counties. In 1969, they moved to West Point, NE where they worked at IBP in Dakota City, NE. Marlene previously worked several years in the dining room of the Norfolk Regional Center. They had eight children, seven girls and one boy. After West Point, they moved to Walthill, NE, where she was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was divorced from Harvey Mohnson in 1981.

Marlene married her second husband, George W. Young on May 30, 1993. They made their home in Walthill, NE until 2000 when they sold their house and purchased a home on five acres north of Beemer, NE. George passed away in 2002. Marlene stayed in their home and retired from the Pender Hospital in 2003 after working there as a housekeeper for 33 years to take care of the acreage. She was a member of the Beemer Methodist Church.

Marlene loved all animals, but had a soft spot for cats, dogs, foxes, raccoons, and a wild skunk she made into a pet. She took in and rescued many animals and enjoyed the companionship of her pets. She loved the outdoors and nature, especially flowers and birds. Marlene loved her large family, and the many get-togethers with children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed photography, genealogy, reading, and traveling, as well as camping through the Midwestern states with her husband, George. During the depression and war years, she engaged in many activities on the farm, gardening and canning, working with the livestock and performing other farm tasks.

Marlene is survived by seven daughters and one son; Karen Schmode of Pierce, NE; Lana (Paul) Thun of Battle Creek, NE, Linda Maslonka of Lyons, NE, Grace Jump of Rosalie, NE, Patty (Rick) Lewin of Cedar Rapids, IA, Judy Rogers of South Sioux City, NE, Peggy (Dan) Garvin of Jackson, NE, Scott Mohnson of Homer, NE; twenty-one grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great grandchildren; two sisters-in-laws, Tillie Johnson of San Diego, CA, Janet Johnson of Victor, MT; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren; and step-great-grandchildren.

Marlene was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Harvey Mohnson; second husband, George Young; brothers, Stanley, Marvin, and Lester Johnson; sisters-in-law, Myrna Johnson and Tippie  Johnson; grandson, Gage Jump; great-granddaughter Lacy Anderson; great-grandson, Quinton Matis; nephew, Eric Johnson; sons-in-law, Duane Mandl, Gerald Jump, and Steven O. Matis.
