Maxwell E. Groves

Maxwell E. Groves, 94, of Emerson, NE died on Wednesday, April 7, 2021 at Heritage of Emerson Nursing Home in Emerson, NE.  The funeral service for Max will be Tuesday, April 13, 2021 at St. Luke Lutheran Church at 10:00 a.m.  A visitation will be Monday, April 12, 2021 at St. Luke Lutheran Church from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.  Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City, IA.  Memorials are suggested to the family for future designation.  Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Emerson. 

Max was born on October 1, 1926 in Sioux City, IA, the son of Ernest and Viola Groves.  Following school, Max worked for the railroad shoveling coal.  He later went on to weld, working for Wiltsey Welding and later for Hauckenson-Beatty Welding.  On October 3, 1947, Max married Dorothy Lukens in Elk Point, S.D. they lived in Sioux City until 1985 and then made their home in Hubbard, Neb.  Max enjoyed playing the accordion and country music.  Over the 64 years that Max and Dorothy were married, they loved to dance, attending many country music jams. They belonged to the Country Music Association for 20 years, making many friends along the way.  Dorothy passed away in 2012.  In 2017, Max moved from Hubbard, NE to Emerson, NE.

Max is survived by his son, Duane Groves of Loveland, CO; daughter, Trish (Marty) Rohde of Emerson, NE; grandchildren, Rob Groves, Chris (Michelle) Groves, Derrick Groves, Dan Rohde, Michele Rohde, David (Alisha) Rohde and sixteen great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy; son, Roland Groves; brothers Tony and David; sisters, Mary and Jean.
