Russell C. Sorensen, 91, of Thurston, NE died on Friday, August 17, 2018 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, IA. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 21, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at the Cornerstone Assembly of God Church in Pender, NE. A visitation will be held on Monday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Munderloh – Smith Funeral Home in Pender, NE. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Walthill. Memorials are suggested to the family for future designation. Russell was born on April 14, 1927, the son of Viggo and Beulah (Evans) Sorensen in Hartington, NE. He attended Wakefield High School in Wakefield, NE. Russell entered the United States Army near the end of WWII, where he was stationed in Korea. He was united in marriage to Hazel Potter on November 14, 1952. They eloped to the “scheduled fishing trip” in Luverne, MN. They lived two miles from Wakefield, later moving to one mile West of Thurston, where he farmed. He was the owner of Sorensen Trucking and Grain Elevator in Wakefield, NE. Russell attended church in Wayne, NE and later in Pender, NE. He visited several ministries in Costa Rica and Nebraska Assembly of God camps, where he worked as a cook. He enjoyed fishing, cooking and coffee at the “office”. He is survived by children, Marjorie (Jerry) Johnson of Wichita, KS, Steve (Tifani) Sorensen of Aurora, CO, Teresa Sorensen of Omaha, NE, Philip Sorensen of Omaha, NE, Audrey (Kevin) Kaser of Pender, NE and Cecil (Leslie) Sorensen of Thurston, NE; 13 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren. Russell was preceded in death by his parents, wife Hazel and brothers Donald and Earl.
