Sidney D. Preston

Sidney D. Preston, 93, formerly of Wakefield, NE passed away on Wednesday, January 5, 2022, at Marquis Place in Elkhorn, NE.  The funeral will be on Monday, January 10, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at Salem Lutheran Church in Wakefield, NE.  The burial will be in the Wakefield Cemetery in Wakefield.  In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer Association (https://act.alz.org/site/TR/Events/Tributes-AlzheimersChampions?pg=fund&fr_id=1060&pxfid=722001 or 1315 Zenith Dr., Suite B, Sioux City, IA 51103).  Arrangements are under the direction of Bressler-Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Wakefield, NE. 

Sid was born on April 6, 1928, to Nova and Florence (Getzinger) Preston in rural Burt County Nebraska.  He attended and graduated from Lyons High School in Lyons, NE.  On January 29, 1947, Sid married Shirley Swanson in North Bend, NE.  To this union, the couple had 5 children. 

Sid worked for Northern Natural Gas for 27 years.  He was active in the Wakefield community by serving on the school board, care center board, and the city council.  He was also active in the Presbyterian Church serving as an elder and as the treasurer, then later in life Salem Lutheran Church as an usher.  Sid loved sports! He played baseball well into his forties.  Sid umpired and refereed baseball, football, and basketball.  He was a 600 bowler and an avid golfer. 

Sid is survived by his wife of 74 years and 11 months, Shirley; children, Gary (Barb) Preston, Mary (Scott) Nelson, Nancy Preston, Thomas (Shannon) Preston; daughter-in-law, Donna Preston; sister Lorna VonSeggern; sister-in-law, Jean Preston; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Sid is preceded in death by his parents; son, Michael Preston; infant brother, Winston Preston; brother Wesley Preston.
