William was born on August 9, 1947, in Sioux City, IA to William, Sr. and Blanche (Pycha) Hamann. He attended and graduated from Winnebago High School in 1965. Following high school, he attended a Farmer’s Short Course in Omaha, NE, and then returned home to help on the family farm. He lived on the family farm from when he was 3 days old until his death.

Affectionately known to his family as Billy, he helped his parents run the farm for many years and helped take care of their 1,100 chickens. He loved all aspects of the farm especially when he could drive the tractors. He always referred to himself as a “grumpy old bachelor”. When he stopped farming, he worked many years at the Pony Express gas station in South Sioux City, NE. He also worked many years at the Dollar General in Winnebago, NE where he was known as “Dollar Bill”.

He was also very involved in the church and loved to attend every Sunday. Billy loved Nebraska football, farming, walking outside, his family, and teasing his nieces and nephews, and cousins with his silly sense of humor.

William is survived by his nephew, Jason Johnson of Winnebago, NE; nieces, Alissa (Travis) Byrd of Lockwood, MO, Dianne (Lewis) Echols of Brandon, MS, Brenda (Eric) Collins of Oakland, CA; great-nieces, Elizabeth, Rowan, Alisa, Tessa; great-nephews, Wesley, Porter, Isiah, Ben; great-great-nieces, Lainey, and Emilia.

William is preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Margaret (Herbert) Hansen, and Blanche “Marie” Johnson.
